Geography at St. John's

Geography is an interesting and exciting subject! At St John’s we aim to keep it that way!

We endeavour to stimulate the boys’ curiosity about the world, investigating places and themes across a widening range of topics. We want the boys to be able to ask relevant geographical questions, and develop knowledge and understanding about places and environments throughout the world. We develop the boys’ understanding of maps, physical and human landscapes and the processes that shape them! We also aim to develop an understanding of sustainable development and global interdependence.

Enjoyment of the subject is paramount and through a combination of guided learning and independent research we ensure that the boys develop an excellent knowledge of the subject, and a love of it too!

Geography is taught by the class teachers from Year 1 to Year 4. Our younger boys, Year 1 and Year 2, are only involved in the subject in the Summer Term. Years 3 and 4 have a fifty minute lesson per week throughout the year. From Year 5 to Year 8, the boys have two fifty minute lessons and are taught by the Geography specialist.

Boys are introduced to mapwork from a very early age and this is developed through interesting and stimulating mapping assignments. A great deal of use is made of ordnance survey maps.

In Year 7 we formally introduce fieldwork studies to the boys. This is an important aspect of Geography that the boys thoroughly enjoy. It culminates in a local environmentally based study/project which they complete by the end of the Autumn Term in Year 8.

Hopefully, by the end of Year 8, the boys have learnt a great deal, have an understanding of many of our global issues and have enjoyed the subject!
