At St. John's we aim to broaden the boys' knowledge of other faiths - and in particular the six main world religions - but also to enhance their spiritual, moral, cultural and social development. We hope that their work will engender in them a sense of wonder and respect for the world, a confidence in their own sense of identity and a willingness to recognise the variety of responses including a respect for the practice and non-practice of religion. As a subject Religious Studies helps develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues as well as a willingness to tolerate uncertainty and acknowledge controversy.
All pupils have one lesson per week in which we draw on the experiences of the different faith backgrounds and encourage active class discussion. Assembly is seen as an opportunity to reinforce the spiritual life of the School and further the knowledge and understanding of all religions.
In Years 3 and 4, the boys examine each of the main world religions, focusing on buildings, festivals and rites of passage.
In Year 5, the boys study Christianity in depth, exploring the Bible and the main beliefs, festivals, ceremonies and places of worship. They visit a local Church to bring their studies to life. They also study Islam in depth.
In Years 6 the boys study a selection of Old and New Testament narratives in order to prepare them for their public examinations in Year 7 and 8. The boys also examine various ethical issues to develop their ability to explain their ideas about our complex world.
In Year 7 and 8 the pupils continue studying the Old and New Testament, in preparation for their transfer examinations to senior school. Pupils are also encouraged to explore questions of morality and the values of contemporary society.
