At St. John's we aim to make Science an engaging and exciting part of your son’s education. Learning Science should be fun, challenging and thought-provoking. As well as learning the essential material the boys are also encouraged to develop their own strategies for learning and to adopt problem solving techniques.
Children are naturally fascinated by everything in the world around them and Science makes a valuable contribution to their understanding of the things they see.
At St. John’s we aim to teach children scientific skills through practical work and demonstration – to build on their natural curiosity and help them acquire scientific knowledge and understanding; to help them develop respect for their environment and stimulate them to investigate and question their world.

We have two fully equipped Science laboratories, which enable us to perform a full range of chemical, biological and physical experiments, the functioning of which is supported by a healthy budget and an enthusiastic science technician who helps prepare and clean up after all those chemistry experiments!
An important aspect of science teaching in our School is the cultivation of personal interests; for example, bird watching, astronomy, nature studies, meteorology; for each of these we have an extensive range of specialist resources.
Our popular Science Club which meets after school allows the boys to extend further the scope of practical scientific work and investigation as well as to reinforce what is taught in lessons.
Every year we hold a Science Week in which we have a focus for the whole school on one particular area of Science. We invite guest speakers, hold workshops and set competitions which encourage the boys to get involved and interested.
Throughout the School we make full use of a broad range of data collection equipment and integrate the use of Information Technology into our teaching.
Overall we hope to make Science fun and exciting; and to create a sense of wonder, and responsibility for, the world around us.
