Every few weeks I change "The Big Picture" - the picture on the opening page of the St. John's site. It's always nice to have a new picture up but often it's rather a shame that we have to say goodbye to the picture it replaces. This gallery is their retirement home. You'll find pictures here covering all aspects of life at St. John's. I hope you enjoy them.

On Monday 8th March 2010 this brass group and Mrs Chamberlain's wind ensemble performed to the children at RNIB Sunshine House School. Afterwards the children touched the boys' instruments as they played them to 'feel the sounds'. It was a worthwhile and enjoyable trip.

The evening of Monday, 1st March 2010 saw the annual joint Merchant Taylor's School and St. John's School concert up at the Merchant Taylors' Hall in the City. The boys perform for an audience made up of their parents, Governors and the Court of the Merchant Taylors' Company. We had two groups performing; the woodwind ensemble you can see here and a string ensemble.

We eventually managed to re-open for the Easter term at the start of 2010 two days late and came back to a very snowy St. John's. Here are boys in our very youngest year - the Lambs - well wrapped up and having a lot of fun with the snow.

Here is the school looking very peaceful under a blanket of snow on Thursday 7th Jan 2010. On the other side of the Main House, however, it was a scene of hectic activity as Mr Doughty, Mr Johnson and their teams spent all day clearing drives, footpaths, playgrounds and carparks so that we could re-open for the new term on Friday - two days later than planned.

We celebrated the official start of the summer of 2009 by running the Northwood 500 where house teams of Yr7 and Yr8 boys compete in running an obstacle course in our woods. The course includes a cargo net, ropewalks, a rope swing, things to crawl under and climb over and this flying fox.

The PrePrep playground, the carpark and the Science block all looking very subdued under a snow laden sky on a very snowy Friday at the start of February 2009. It started snowing here at 6.00 a.m. and continued all morning. By 7.00 the first staff in were reporting slow journeys, tricky roads and sliding all over the road on Potter Street Hill; which led to the decision to close the school for the day.

Ding-dong merrily on high ... and here is the St. John's Science department's contribution to Christmas festivities. This rather "Heath Robinson" contraption is a working model of an electric bell put together by Mr MacAulay, our science technician whose arm you can see operating the switch.
When he closes the circuit by pressing the switch, current flows through the electro-magnet which attracts the hacksaw blade making the striker at the top ring the bell but this breaks the circuit switching off the electro-magnet which allows the hacksaw blade to spring back completing the circuit again and so on.
The bright white dot in the centre is a spark arcing across as the gap between the hacksaw blade and the copper rod opens and closes.

At 6.30 a.m. this morning (Thursday 29th Jan 2004) we inspected Potter Street Hill and the school entrance and carpark and the exit from the carpark. Potter Street Hill was gritted just after 8.00 p.m. last night up to the school entrance. Unfortunately a car waiting in the road meant that the gritter couldn't proceed further; so the stretch from the exit to the carpark down to the entrance wasn't gritted and was very icy first thing in the morning.
Mr Doughty and his team have been clearing snow and spreading grit and cars are now moving on and off the carpark freely. If you have been delaying your trip in, things are now looking a lot better here.

For anyone who likes an extra day off school one of the highlights of the first half of the 2003 Lent term would have to have been our first major fall of snow here for quite a few years.
