St. John's Under Snow

Thursday 8th February 2007

The carpark at 8.10 a.m.

This was the scene on our carpark this morning when it would normally be bustling. Join me on a tour of the school to see what the promised snow delivered.

The quiet area

On Wednesday the Met Office forecast a heavy fall of snow for the south east and as you can see in this shot of the quiet area they certainly got it right.

Looking across the 1st XI square.

This is looking out across the 1st XI cricket square. Sorry about the greyness but I was out taking these shortly after 8 o'clock in the morning.

Woods and ponds in the snow.

This is further down the path in the woods looking back up towards the Science block. Notice the daffodils half hidden in the snow.

The oak tree field.

Notice how the snow has piled up on every vaguely horizontal surface. One of the reasons I was out so early was that I knew that within a few hours the woods would be a 'no go' area; unless, of course, you like having large quantities of wet snow dropping on your head.

The all-weather surface in the snow.

Look at the way the snow has plastered itself on the mesh of the fencing - the sign of wet, perfect for building a snowman, snow.

Looking from the cricket nets back towards the main building.

This was taken from down by the cricket nets looking back up towards the main building and the science block.

Looking from the terrace outside the main building.

And this is looking the other way from the terrace in front of the main building down towards the woods and the cricket nets.

The Tom Derbyshire Memorial rose garden under heavy snow.

Further along in front of the Main Building, this is the Tom Derbyshire rose garden under a good blanket of snow.

Outside the Dining Hall.

This is normally one of the main thoroughfares of the school. An hour after this was taken it started snowing again and those few tracks in the snow disappeared.

A snowbound trike park in the nursery.

Around the corner in the Nursery's courtyard their trikes are snowbound.

The steps up to the Preprep playground.

This photo of the steps up to the Preprep playground gives a very good impression of how thick (by our normal London standards) the snow actually was.

From the Preprep playground shelter.

Looking from the Preprep playground shelter out over a snowy roofscape.

The gym and heavy snow.

I'm now heading back from my 'snow patrol' but paused to take this shot of the Gym and its apple trees and flowerbeds blanketed in snow.

St. John's and heavy snow.

While I was working on this story it started to snow again really quite heavily. All in all, it was most probably a good idea that we weren't all here at school on this particular Thursday.
