St. John's and Merchant Taylors'

St. John's musicians in the courtyard at Merchant Taylors' Hall.
St. John's boys in the courtyard of the Merchant Taylors' Company's Hall in Threadneedle Street. They were there to perform in a joint concert with boys from Merchant Taylors' School.

St. John's is owned by the Merchant Taylors' Educational Trust which looks after the educational interests of the Merchant Taylors' Company. The Company bought St. John's in 1984 from the Norman family on the retirement of our second headmaster, Mr Peter Norman.

The full name of the Merchant Taylors' Company, by which it is described in its Royal Charter of 1503, is the Gild of Merchant Taylors of the Fraternity of St. John the Baptist in the City of London - the same St. John after whom our school is named. One of the symbols associated with St. John the Baptist is a lamb (often shown with a flag or cross) - which you can see on our shield but also on the coat of arms of the Merchant Taylors' Company and the various Merchant Taylor schools.
