St. John's School Council.

The School Council

What is the School Council?

  • An inclusive, structured, forum for discussion and decision-making
  • A means for children to raise issues and concerns
  • A means to consult all pupils
  • It is made up of an elected representative from each class from Yr1 to Yr8

Why have a School Council?

  • To help children develop responsible attitudes
  • To improve behaviour
  • To give children hands-on experience of issues in the National Curriculum, including PHSE and Citizenship
  • To create a feeling of belonging, encourage listening to others and develop self-confidence
  • To improve pupil/teacher relationships

How does the School Council work?

  • The Chair (Deputy Head) leads the meetings
  • Conventional committee procedures are used
  • Class representatives bring issues to the School Council

When does the School Council take place?

  • Usually on the first Friday in every month at 9.05 am, in the Library

The first meeting of the School Council took place on Friday 8th May, 2009. Eagerly awaited elections had taken place over the previous couple of weeks. There were further meetings in June and July. It was agreed that representatives should change every half year.

It was encouraging to see how the boys took their roles seriously and how they relayed ideas from their classmates. Discussions in the School Council have led to the following changes so far:

  • Refurbishment of the year 8 playground
  • Posters around the School to promote tidiness
  • Water fountains in the main play ground
  • Lockers in all year 7 and 8 classrooms for September 2009
  • Review of the School Homework Diary
  • Update of classroom games for year 8 break times
  • Improvements to safety in the car park/playground
