This year's week focussed on the topic of plants. The programme of events included a series of assemblies given by several forms. 4B entertained us by introducing 'Bernard the Pot Plant' and explaining to Bernard and the rest of the school what parts of plants can be eaten for food. 8H explained how plants can be used in medicines. 7B described the workings of the plant leaf and how it can carry out photosynthesis. Finally 8J helped us to understand how plants were crucial in making coal and oil.
Lunchtime activities included:
The boys were also given the opportunity to examine microscope slides that they prepared themselves.
As ever the highlight of the week was the St John's Science Lecture. This year it was given by Timothy Walker. Timothy is the Director of the Botanical Gardens at Oxford University. He gave an entertaining an informative talk on 'The Healing Power of Plants'. A review of the lecture written by Grant Winton can be found by clicking here.
A plant quiz was also held. You can download a copy of the quiz by clicking here (Science Week Quiz.doc).
