History of St John’s School

St John’s has been a leading preparatory school for boys in Pinner, Harrow, and Northwood since 1920. Founded by Mr. Claude Norman, the school began in a single classroom at St John’s Church, Pinner. As it grew, it moved to The Briary in Moss Lane, then to Barrow Point House in 1927. A devastating fire in 1930 destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt and remained home to St John’s for the next 40 years.

Houses & The War (1935–1945)

The school’s House system was initially named after staff members. In 1935, they were renamed Lawrence, Lincoln, and Oates, with Churchill added after WWII.

During the war, Mr. Norman chose to keep the school in Pinner. Pupils recall watching air battles overhead and assisting in handling military supplies. Mr. Norman balanced his role as Headmaster with serving as Lieutenant Colonel in the Home Guard.

A New Home at Pinner Hill (1951–1970)

After Mr. Norman’s sudden passing in 1951, his son, Peter Norman, took over. With demand for places growing, he spent years searching for a larger site. In 1970, he successfully relocated the school to its current 30-acre home at Pinner Hill, securing Potter Street House (now The White House) against significant challenges. Over the following decades, sports fields, new buildings, and modern facilities were added.

Merchant Taylors & Expansion (1984–1999)

In 1984, St John’s became part of the Merchant Taylors’ Educational Trust, ensuring long-term stability. Under new governance, the school expanded significantly, with new teaching blocks, a Pre-Prep, a dedicated Music and Art wing, and improved sports facilities. By the 1990s, pupil numbers had reached 350.

Into the 21st Century (2000–2020)

The school continued to grow, introducing a state-of-the-art all-weather playing surface in 2006, expanding academic facilities, and enhancing outdoor spaces. In 2020, St John’s celebrated its Centenary with a Service of Thanksgiving and the opening of the Centenary Sports Hall and Treehouse.

Today & Beyond (2020–Present)

St John’s continues to evolve while staying true to its heritage. With a century of excellence behind us, we look forward to supporting our boys in their educational journey, shaping the future for generations of pupils to come.
