We are pleased to invite applications for entry into Reception in September 2026.
As part of the assessment process, boys will be invited to St John’s in small groups of 6–8 children for a play based session lasting around 50 minutes. These are friendly and informal sessions, designed to be enjoyable and relaxed for the boys.
Assessments are aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, with a focus on social interaction, communication, and language development to identify boys we believe will thrive in our vibrant and nurturing school environment.
Parents are warmly welcomed to stay onsite during the session and will have the opportunity to meet members of staff, ask any questions, and speak with the Headmaster.
Ahead of the assessment, St John’s will contact your son’s current setting for a confidential pupil reference to support our understanding of his learning journey so far.
Occasionally, places become available in other year groups including at 7+ (Year 3).
As part of the admissions process, boys are invited to St John’s to sit age-appropriate assessments and spend time in the classroom, giving them a chance to experience the school day and get to know us better. This also gives us the opportunity to get to know him and to understand his talents and potential.
Assessments for older boys will focus on mathematics and literacy, and there will also be a small group discussion with a senior member of staff to help us get to know each boy as an individual.
Prior to the assessment day, we will request a confidential pupil reference and a written report from your son’s current school to support our understanding of his learning and progress so far.
