Early Years Foundation Stage (Eyfs) Curriculum

The Government document The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for the curriculum from birth to 5 years olds. It is based around four themes:

  • A Unique child
  • Positive relationships
  • Enabling environments
  • Learning and development

These themes are linked to important principles regarding children’s learning and development.

The curriculum consists of 7 areas of learning – 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas

Prime Areas

Communication and language
Physical development
Personal, social and emotional

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive art and design

The seven areas are used to plan both the daily activities and the learning environment – indoors and out. Activities often provide opportunities for the boys to develop a number of skills across several areas of learning.

The seven areas are divided into early learning goals. It is expected that most children will have achieved these goals by the end of Reception although at St John’s many boys will have exceeded them.

The teaching and experiences that your son will receive at St John’s will enable him to acquire, at his own pace, the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to achieve the Early Learning Goals within the seven areas of learning.
