Sport

At St John’s, every boy is encouraged to engage in sport, build physical fitness, and experience the power of teamwork. Our main sports rugby, hockey, cricket, and athletics, are taught by specialist coaches who inspire a passion for physical activity across exceptional facilities including:

  • Four rugby pitches
  • Three cricket grounds
  • An athletics track
  • A cross-country course
  • A pitch and putt golf course
  • A floodlit all-weather pitch for hockey, football, and summer tennis
  • A fully equipped gymnasium
  • Access to swimming and hockey at Merchant Taylors’ School

From Year 3, boys participate in inter-school fixtures across our core sports and additional activities like basketball, cross-country, tennis, and golf. We compete nationally and have taken our rugby and cricket teams on international tours to Italy, Grenada, and Sri Lanka.

Rugby

Rugby is our autumn sport.

Starting with tag rugby in Year 3 and progressing to contact rugby by Year 4, every boy has the chance to represent the school. Teams compete locally and nationally, including in the prestigious Rosslyn Park National School Sevens. St John’s is proud to host its own Invitational Sevens Tournament, attracting top schools from around the region.

Hockey

Hockey is the focus during the spring term.

Boys develop essential skills from Year 3 and begin fixtures in Year 5, receiving expert coaching, including from specialists at Merchant Taylors’ School. Senior teams compete in the Merchant Taylors’ Hockey League, providing additional opportunities for excellence.

Cricket

Cricket takes centre stage in the summer term.

Boys start with kwik cricket in Years 3 and 4 to help acquire basic concepts and skills, progressing to hard ball cricket from Year 5. St John’s boasts eleven teams and around sixty fixtures, played across three beautiful cricket grounds and all-weather nets.

Athletics

Athletics completes the summer term.

Boys hone their track and field skills in P.E. lessons and clubs, competing in national events and at our annual Sports Days. With strong house competition and the drive to break school records, athletics provides a thrilling challenge for all.
